Title Imagination
Use Poster for the V&A Museum of Childhood
Commissioner AMV BBDO
Client V&A Museum
Judges comments:
This is a fun, intriguing and playful poster. It creates a world the viewer wants to get involved in. It's more than just a message, it evokes an emotional reaction about the experience of going to the museum. It is a strong example of illustration collaborating successfully with design and art direction, which is key to successful advertising.
New Talent Winner Not awarded
Judges comments:
The New Talent shortlisted entries all had real merit as promotional and design projects but we didn't think there was a project that actively contributed to an advertising campaign in an exemplary way. We have therefore chosen to commend three shortlisted entries for strong creative work but not award a category winner. These are Dariusz Cerazy (Spring Summer Winter Fall), Finn Clark (Mindful) and Tanya Griffiths (World of Stories).

Use Poetry book written and illustrated by Merav Salomon

We liked the freshness and individual style of this small book. It is a very enjoyable object to hold. It is a modest size but there is a lot going on visually. It is original, quirky, self-assured and humorous.

Judges Comments:
This is a charming project. There is something quite magical about it. The drawings are stunning and the use of trees as a framing device is interesting. We like the fact that this work is experimenting with form. Innovation and experiment are really important in student work because this is the time when illustrators can work without constraints.
CHILDREN'S BOOK
Professional Winner Levi Pinfold
Title Black Dog
Use Picture Book

Judges Comments:
This is an elegant and highly accomplished picture book by a young illustrator with talent beyond his years. The characterisation is very strong, the pictures are composed beautifully and the luminous painting is exquisite. Black Dog is an original picture book, which has global appeal and is sure to become a timeless classic. This is a book we all love, and it was a unanimous decision to award Black Dog first prize.

The art in The Sea Tiger is lyrical, elegiac and highly imaginative. The illustrator understands composition very well, has great draughtsmanship and a sophisticated palette. The reader immediately wants to know the whole story and the judges believe that this book deserves to be published.

Judges Comments:
This is an inventive and well executed project. It is a highly original visual language, it is visually engrossing and there is a great deal for the viewer to explore. The animation and pacing work well with the imagery. We are intrigued that this is work by an architecture student and look forward to seeing the final game when production is complete.

Title Scouse
Use Illustration for an interview with Tony Crowley, a cultural historian, on the changing accent in Liverpool.
Commissioner Red Pepper Magazine
Judges Comments:
This is a delightful and eloquent image, which doesn't use typical imagery and so avoids cliché. The image is warm and friendly but also layered and complex. It isn't about an instant message but provides a visual story that lifts and compliments the readers appreciation of the article. You don't need to understand it straight way, it draws you in, you want to know more and keep returning to the detail which is one of its strengths.
New Talent Winner John Riordan
Title Capital City
Use Graphic poem about The City and the financial crisis.
College Camberwell College of Arts
Course MA Illustration
Judges Comments:
We really liked the sense of narrative and social comment in this work. The words are written by the illustrator and so the text and image work together rather than illustration responding to a text. It is a very impressive piece of work, the spreads are stunning. It has real impact and has a lot of atmosphere.
PUBLIC REALM
Professional Winner Jane Reiseger

This is a really enlightened, ambitious and inspirational project. It was a courageous and very successful decision to work with one illustrator throughout the building. The illustration is excellent and has been applied with real design skill to to enliven the whole building and improve its functionality. This is an exceptional example of illustration transforming an important public building and of an illustrator working collaboratively with a design team.

Judges Comments:
This is a hands down winner for us. It is such a strong project in terms of its aims and outcomes. We are impressed that the participants are all 16 years old and getting involved in such a big project. The project combines street art and illustration very effectively and has a strong message. It is a beautiful thing.
RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE COMMUNICATION
Professional Winner Nicolle Fuller
Title Nanolipogel Attacking Cancer
Commissioner Yale University
Use:
Visual showcase for recently published research to evoke interest from the non-science public and describe how nanotechnology might help combat cancer.
Judges Comments:
From a very diverse and impressive range of work in this category this image impressed us because it combined accurate, compelling and significant scientific data with a strong aesthetic appeal. It is a medical illustration that remains accessible to a popular audience. The colour palette works well and it has drama. We liked that it had visual and cultural references from other fields such as 1950's sci fi movies which provide a richness and humour alongside the hard science.
New Talent Winner Mitch Miller
Title A Showman's Yard in the East End
College Glasgow School of Art
Course PhD in Visual Communications
Use
A 'dialectogram' created through social engagement, ethnographic and documentary messages to show the complexity of life and cultures within urban spaces. Displayed at Glasgow Museums and used as an educational tool by the Scottish Traveller Education Programme.
Judges Comments
This is a genuinely research based piece and an interesting model of illustration as an instigator and documentor of social issues. The research into a private subject matter is sensitively done. It is really good to see illustration revealing something important in a new way.
SELF-INITIATED
Professional Winner Anna Cattermole
Title Reportage of Traditional Wooden Boat Building
Use
Personal project leading to exhibition collaboration with National Maritime Museum
Judges Comments:
This is a highly successful self-initiated project, which started with personal interest and has grown into a significant project with a national museum. It is a great example of where following your curiosity can take you. We are particularly impressed that a consequence of creating this body of work will be an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum showing objects from storage relating to wooden boat building. Colour is used very effectively to unify the 50 drawings created on site.
New Talent Winner Nate Kitch
Title Series illustrating case studies in Oliver Sach's book, 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat'.
College Southampton Solent University
Course BA (Hons) Illustration
Use University project
Judges Comments:
The use of metaphor, imagery and colour in this series of images is clever and subtle. There is a slight sliding out focus that hints at the disconnect between the conscious and unconscious mind which is central to the subject matter. The colour palette is great.
